Of course, I did many of the things anyone else does when learning a language: Do some Project Euler, do some puzzles and gradually tackle more complicated things. I ended up building this system called Ike, a graphical programming toolkit you can wire to input events, draw polygons and bitmaps on the screen, play sound. So I implemented some arcade games, trying to do more open ended things instead of batch mode programs. Eventually I got some opportunities in consulting and technical writing which led me to professional k work. It's quite difficult to work your way into the places these languages are used; but they understand they won't get candidates deeply familiar with these languages. They're looking for people willing to give it a try in spite of it not looking like Java. There's also some luck involved which I try to pay forward.
